Clinical Trials

Identifying research gaps, conducting rigorous studies and expending evidence base

Clinical trials are vital for advancing evidence-based practice and improving patient outcomes in palliative care. Despite progress in other medical fields, this area often lacks robust evidence to guide optimal treatment, symptom management, and effective communication models for diverse populations.

For Australia, with its unique geographical and demographic challenges, well-designed clinical trials are essential to address specific needs, particularly for rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. Current practices often rely on anecdotal experience or extrapolated evidence, which may not adequately address the distinct needs of palliative care patients.

Rigorous trials investigating novel interventions, validating existing practices, and exploring care models are crucial for building a strong evidence base. These trials will inform clinical guidelines, educational programs, and policy development, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for patients and their families facing life-limiting illnesses across Australia.

Clinical Trials in Palliative Care

Revitalise program

This five-year initiative brings cancer-related clinical trials to regional Victoria through eight regional sites. Funded by $18.6 million from the Australian Government Medical Research Future Fund, it addresses access equity for patients who have difficulty traveling but want to participate in innovative research.
