Pancreatic Cancer Roadmap
GUIDANCE TO BEST CARE: DEVELOPING A PATHWAY TO EARLY PALLIATIVE CARE FOR PEOPLE WITH PANCREATIC CANCER IN AUSTRALIA
Background
Pancreatic cancer is a highly aggressive disease with a low survival rate. Patients often experience late symptom onset, high pain burden, and limited treatment options. The management of pancreatic cancer requires a holistic approach that addresses both physical and emotional needs. The development of a clear referral pathway for early palliative care is crucial to improve the quality of life for individuals with pancreatic cancer and their families.
Aim
To develop an evidence-based and community-informed pathway, with associated clinical guidance and implementation plans, for early access to palliative care for people with pancreatic cancer.
Method
The pathway development involved a longitudinal iterative approach. Key steps included:
Literature Reviews: Comprehensive literature reviews were conducted to identify existing evidence and best practices in early palliative care for pancreatic cancer.
Stakeholder Consultation: Extensive consultation was undertaken with a diverse range of stakeholders, including clinicians, consumers, peak body organizations, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Deliberative Dialogue: A deliberative dialogue approach was adopted to review the collected evidence and incorporate the insights and experiences of stakeholders. This facilitated the development of a pathway that is both evidence-based and responsive to the needs of patients and their families.
OUTCOMES
The developed pathway includes the following:
Early Referral: Referral to palliative care should be triggered by the diagnosis of unresectable disease for all patients with pancreatic cancer
.Palliative Care Representation
Cancer Care Coordinators
Pain Screening
Early Palliative Care Introduction
Outpatient Consultation
Stable Patients
Transition to Community and Inpatient Palliative Care
