Project Overview

Victorian Aboriginal Cancer Journey Strategy
The primary goal of this project was to develop a comprehensive strategy that addresses the unique needs and values of the local Aboriginal community in the context of the Victorian Aboriginal Cancer Journey. This included establishing, implementing, and evaluating a new role focused on improving cancer care and collating all findings into a comprehensive toolkit for broader adoption.
Project Leads: Marissa Mulcahy, Jennifer Philip
Background

Understanding the historical context and current landscape relevant to Aboriginal cancer care in Victoria is crucial. This project specifically addresses the disparities and unique challenges faced by First Nations people throughout their cancer journey, acknowledging the importance of cultural identity, community connection, and self-determination in health outcomes within the complex landscape of cancer care.
Community Advisory Group

Establishing and collaborating with a dedicated Community Advisory Group is central to this initiative. This group plays a crucial role in guiding the project, ensuring that all strategies and interventions are deeply rooted in the experiences and aspirations of the local community, fostering a collaborative and culturally appropriate approach to cancer care improvement.
Key Requirements

Identifying and incorporating specific requirements was essential to align the strategy with the needs and values of the local Aboriginal community. These requirements include continuous, between-service coordination at all stages of the cancer journey, knowledge about cancer-specific needs, strong connections with First Nations Health Workers and multidisciplinary cancer teams, and a focus on advocacy and education about cultural safety in cancer care.
Next Steps

The project's ongoing efforts involve implementing recommendations from VACCHO (Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation) and progressing the Victorian Aboriginal Cancer Journey Strategy. This comprehensive strategy will outline actionable steps to implement culturally responsive cancer care across the state, ensuring a holistic and supportive journey for First Nations individuals and their families.
